US nonfarm payrolls up by 115,000 in April

Total nonfarm payroll employment in the United States rose by 115,000 in April, according to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday. The figure followed an upward revision to a gain of 185,000 jobs in March.

Health care added the most positions at 37,000, followed by transportation and warehousing at 30,000 and retail trade at 22,000. Employment in the information sector fell by 13,000, while the federal government cut 9,000 jobs. The unemployment rate was unchanged from March at 4.3%, with the number of unemployed remaining stable at 7.4 million, while the labor force participation rate stood at 61.8%.

Average hourly earnings rose by 6 cents, or 0.2%, to $37.41. The average workweek edged up by 0.1 hour to 34.3 hours.
